Political Capital

It looks like Bush's political capital may be a lot lower than he thought. He garners only 49% approval rating. This is the lowest of any re-elected president. The republican controlled congress only has a 41% approval rating. With much of his political capital spent on Iraq and much more needed, his ambitious domestic agenda may be shoved by the wayside. This is what happends when you area divider, not a uniter. (Link to Story)

I'll never say I agree with Bush 100% of the time, but come on. We are at war, and that means that there are going to be times when his approval level is low, and times when it soars, so I personally say we wait till inauguration day 2005 (and after Condi is sworn in, that's a joke, BTW) we'll take an AVERAGE of his second term, OK?

I am just saying that I don't think he has as much political capital as he think he does. I think he has a mandate... a mandate to govern from the center.

Dingo,

I don't see those ratings as meaning much, personally. I wouldn't be impressed if they were in the 60's, and I'm not surprised to see them this low. We are in the land of difficult choices and this is going to make everyone sullen.

The only mandate Bush has is to do the best he can and try to deal with the worst situations. Most Americans are not all that political and are going to judge things on a case-by-case basis. I never saw any raving enthusiasm for Bush among most of the people who voted for him, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Well, a mandate to do the best they can is a pretty much given. I don't think there has ever been a mandate to do a poor job. But he acts like he has the 100% backing of a great majority of Americans when he really does not. This is important in how how much and how far he can push his agenda. His own party will rebel if he goes too far.
