Kerry Winning in Paper Endorsements
While the national polls are split evenly, Kerry is leading 125-96 in the number of papers across the country that have made presidential endorsements. This is a marked turn around from 2000 when 175 papers endorsed Bush, and only 121 backed Gore. This year, 35 of the papers that endorsed Bush in 2000 have now sided with Kerry. Only 4 that backed Gore in 2000 now endorse Bush. This is interesting for not only the traditional notions of public support, but there is also a deeper issue. While Journalists, admittedly, consider themselves to be more Democratic/Liberal, Editors are just the opposite and tend to more conservative than their writing staff. It is interesting to see such a large shift in this more conservative constituent for the Democratic contender. (Link)
